Quark vs. InDesign

Ever since Adobe published InDesign in 2002, the competition between these two main design programs has been a main discussion of journalists and graphic designers.  Our art director personally prefers InDesign over Quark Xpress.

“InDesign is part of a creative suite that is totally combatible with itself.  Quark can’t do that.  InDesign also has so many more effects you can put on objects, text, or photos,” Emily Leithauser, Exodus art director, said. “InDesign doesn’t limit my creativity.”

Read below for information on both programs and check out some websites that explain the competitive edge InDesign seems to have over Quark.

InDesign CS4 InDesign CS4

“Adobe InDesign is a desktop publishing (DTP) software application produced by Adobe Systems which can be used to create anything from posters, flyers, and brochures to full magazines or books.” (wikipedia)

Quark Xpress

“QuarkXPress (“Quark”) is a computer application for creating and editing complex page layouts in a WYSIWYG environment. It runs on Mac OS X and Windows. It was first released by Quark, Inc. in 1987 and is still owned and published by them.” (wikipedia)

Q&A with the Editor in Chief

Editor

Editor

Bennett Sumner

How do you manage the staff?
Our staff this year is incredibly talented and dedicated.  There have been no issues with getting people motivated, so my major role is just making sure everyone feels comfortable with what they are doing on staff.  Because there are so many different facets to Exodus, the main challenge is making sure that every area is covered.

How many hours do you put into it?
So far, probably 4-6 hours a week outside of class, but as our deadline approaches, my schedule will definitely be more full.

How do you prepare for class meetings?
For class meetings, I basically review what we’ve done the previous week and try to asses where we are behind.  Our editorial staff also determined specific deadlines early in the semester so each week we would be working toward a goal.

How did being Crimson editor help prepare you for this position?
While working for the Crimson (Samford’s weekly newspaper), I gained a basic understanding of how the publication process works.  The Crimson is a weekly publication, so that gave me the opportunity to fine tune my editorial and leadership skills.

How important is teamwork and how do you instill that importance in the staff?
Teamwork is crucial to creating a quality publication.  If every member of the staff feels some sort of ownership over the magazine, they will feel motivated to produce their best work.

Web Coordinator

Web Coordinator

Web Coordinator

Patrick McLendon

Patrics job as web-master is pretty straight forward.  He is in charge of web-design and web-content for the 2009 Exodus publication. So far his job has involved setting up a temporary web-site on WordPress, while the actual site is being built in Photoshop.

The site design has involved heavy communication between himself and Emily, the magazine designer, in order to make a cohesive web and print experience. When completed, the website should companion nicely with the print publication and provide an easy and pleasant experience.

Editorial Coordinator

Editorial Coordinator

Sarah Andrews

Sarah’s job title is ‘Editorial Coordinator.’ Basically, she is responsible for generating story ideas and editing articles once they have been written.

She handles any writing-related issues that may arise and is the general go-to person for all copy that goes in the magazine.

When the theme of “go” originated, Sarah also helped establish the sections of eat, play, shop, and worship.  Once those were established, Sarah came up with multiple story ideas for each section and then, having evaluated the staff’s talents, assigned each story and blurb.

The final thing Sarah does is re-assign stories if a certain places/people are too hard to get in contact with or don’t want to be apart of the publication.

Slideshow Mania…

How to create a video/slide show for your magazine’s website:

1) Go out and shoot some photos that cover your particular topic and download them onto your computer.

2) Pull the files into a program like iMovie (which is what I use).

3) Edit the movie/slideshow.  Add music and a title bar. And don’t forget to put your name on it.

4) Upload to YouTube.

5) Embed the link in your wordpress or other blogsite post.

It really is that simple.  Put your magazine on the cutting edge by getting your content on the web in a fun, modern, and upbeat way.
